Good Thing

I did a lot of bad things to a lot of people, but I only met two people I hated. Lester and my dad. And at different times I promised myself I’d sort both of them out. I’d already dealt with my dad, but Lester was difficult. Whatever Lester did to me, he was allowed to do. And anything I did would land me back inside. For some reason, I thought it would be fair to warn the Princess that Lester had plans for her....

Hush

Here it is salt and mist; salt on my lips and in my clothes and in my breath, and there is salt in the flowers that the woman brings and so they fade in a house where no light enters, only wet fog and the thunder of guns. The house is sour with the smell of the man above. I clean him. Four times in the night, four times in the day, through a hundred days, I lift him from the bed and lay him on the floor and strip the soiled and sodden sheets and put on fresh, and then I wash the man. He is white, like fish, and he smells like a man who has been dead in the heat too long. In the night after he has been drinking he dreams his devils...........
